Painting Green

Painting Green
Oil On Canvas
1730 x 1730

The first corner painting,Painting Red, was produced in 1968. It was followed by a series of similar works all of which consist of dense flat monchromes in each corner of which are clearly defined triangles of contrasting yet closely related colours. In many works in the series the monochromatic area is richly varied just as in Painting Green where the large green area is shot with purples and blues which seem to glow from deep within the pervading green. The corner paintings are austerely non-compositional works in which colour is treated only as a physical fact without symbolic significance of any kind. The corners themselves have a tonal variation between them; they contain the field and generate tension.
